Would You Believe…

If I had told you on September 11, 2001 that eight years later…

  • We would have a president who picked as a close White House advisor someone who stated that America got what was coming to us 9-11, that the United States was a terrorist country, and whose minister had said the same.
  • That the president who had kept the country safe from further terror attacks for eight years would be reviled as a “war criminal.”
  • We would elect a president who would say Victory over the terrorists isn’t really our objective
  • We would have a Congressional leadership that was ready to cede Afghanistan back to the Taliban, because they didn’t think the public thought winning was worth it
  • Our Supreme Court would have concluded that the foreign terrorists who destroyed the WTC were entitled to the same Constitutional Rights as the Americans they butchered
  • We would have a president eager to bring terrorists onto American soil, and would have released other terrorists to taxpayer paid vacations in tropical paradises
  • The president and his party would be seeking to prosecute intelligence agents who put their lives on the line to protect Americans from another attack.
  • The president and his administration would be forbidden to speak of the ‘War on Terrorism’ because the language was considered politically incorrect. Instead, of a terror attack, the events on 9-11-2001 would be considered merely a “man-caused disaster
  • We would have members of an entire political party who thought pouring water on a terrorist’s nose to save American lives was a horror beyond the pale.
  • Hollywood would have released several movies depicting our soldiers and intelligence services as the bad guys (Redacted, Syriana, War Inc, Lions for Lambs, In the Valley of Elah) , and the terrorists as innocent victims (Rendition).
  • A film-maker who described Islamic terrorists as “equivalent to our Minutemen” would be given a place of honor in the president’s box at the DNC convention.
  • We would have a president who apologized to Islamic countries for America defending ourselves against terrorists
  • We would have a president that stood by and did nothing while the world’s leading sponsor of terror developed nuclear weapons
  • Our borders would still be wide open, and two successive administrations would have done nothing to secure them.
  • An environmental group would use the horrific images of the murder of 2,800 people as part of an edgy ad campaign.

Would you have believed me? Would you have been outraged? And if you had known all the above would happen in eight years, would you have shaken your head and said, ‘Good God, what happened to this country? How did we forget?’

8 years later, our heads are right back up our... sand.

Great thread with very appropriate questions. I would say that 53% of the voters in 2008 would probably not only believe everything listed, a good deal of them had something to do with some of the unthinkable instances occurring in the first place.

Such is the state of America today.

  2. Yes, actually I WOULD believe all those things.

Even at the time, I knew this new-found patriotism and unity would be short-lived. The public seems to have a very short memory, for one. For another, the media doesn’t seem to like to show some of the more emotionally-provoking footage taken that day – people jumping out of burning skyscrapers and falling to their deaths, people running for their lives while covered in ash and dust as if escaping an erupting volcano.

For yet another, there are too many people in the media and in the Democratic party who have too much invested in making sure the conservative agenda never comes to fruition. Reminding the public of exactly what we’re up against (a gaggle of bloodthirsty murderers who kill without distinction and observe no rules of war) isn’t congruent with that goal.

I knew even at the time that it wouldn’t take long for the public to lose its stomach for war. Their patience was already long gone by March of 2003 when the Iraq War started. If people had still remembered the horror of 9/11, the anti-war protests would have stopped and there would be none of this claptrap about an “optional” war. Everyone would have understood that both were part of the same struggle, especially since we have evidence that Iraq indeed was a state sponsor of terrorism, as well as a regional threat in its own right.

My only regret is that Bush didn’t go after Iran and Syria as well, during his 2nd term. If he had, I suspect violence in Iraq would have dropped dramatically. Where did people think all those EFP’s and IED materials were coming from…the Tooth Fairy? It also could have meant one big pro-American zone in southern Asia, from the west coast of Israel all the way to the east side of India.

Eight years into The Long War, I think the sentiment that I’m most sick of hearing is that any of this is either optional or unrelated to American security at home. I thought this was made clear to people at least as far back as 2003 – we either fight them over there, or we fight them over here. Period.

“We don’t fight them at all” or “We talk it out” are not options, because they’re definitely interested in a fight even we are not.

I hear the fat traitor has some anti-capitalist screed in the works. Naturally it is dressed up in the tired old “You criticize what you love” bullshit. Some of his friends even compare it to a spousal relationship…when in fact a spouse that was subjected to this kind of unrelenting hate would wonder what he or she was getting out of this marriage.

It’s nice to see that some people on that side are at least willing to admit what they’re doing – trying to overthrow free market capitalism and replace it with central planning, as the American economic system.

I would probably be willing to cut Moore some slack if he were at least telling the truth, but there have been numerous exposes which go through his claims and expose numerous exaggerations, misleading statements, omission of pertinent facts, and outright lies made up out of whole cloth. If you’re really in the right, you shouldn’t have to resort to any of that in order to make your point.

The fact that his movies make money says more about the public than it does about him. But what can you say about people who think John Stewart is news, but Rush Limbaugh is “just an entertainer?”

”The fact that his movies make money says more about the public than it does about him.”

You are right there. The sickos in the US paid $24.5 Million for the last load of lies and crapulance that MM slapped together.

Michael Moore is a revolting fat f**k with absolutely no redeeming qualities. And I am sorry for the asterisk word but there is no other way to describe this waste of oxygen.
